Beer Pong has become a phenomenon in the United States and it is quickly spreading to other countries around the world. It’s genius is it’s simplicity. All you need to do is set up cups in a triangular formation, fill them with beer and take turns trying to toss ping pong balls into the cups from opposite sides of the beer pong table.
Although it is a very simple game there are many variations to beer pong and the rules change from region to region and indeed house to house. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every single variation of beer pong there is so I’ll attempt to explain them here.

Teams
Generally beer pong is played with 1 or 2 player teams. The amount of cups used depends on the number of players on each team, 1 player teams fill up 6 cups while 2 player teams fill up 10. Either way each player ends up drinking about a full beer each game. The only games I’ve seen more then 2 players on each team are Civil War games which you will learn about in just a minute.

Racks
Racks are one of the more house-specific rules. When you hit some of your opponents cups you’ll sometimes end up with hard to hit formations. This is where Racks come in, each game you get a certain number of chances to reform your opponents cups to make them easier to hit. If you are playing 10 cup you get 2 racks and you have to wait until you are down to 6 cups before using your first rack. If you are playing 6 cup you get 1 rack and can rack one you get down to 4 cups. The formations are as follows:
6 cups – triangle 4 cups – diamond 3 cups – triangle 2 cups – straight line facing both teams 1 cup – duh!

The Beer Pong Table
You can play beer pong on any flat surface but most players opt to get themselves a professional table. Pro table lengths are 7-8 ft long and have enough width to support a growing row of empty beer cans. It should also be very sturdy and of course look cool!

Miscellanous
There are a bunch of random rules that some houses participate in.
The most popular one is the Bounce. If you bounce the ball into your opponent’s cup they have to drink TWO cups instead of the one. Careful though, when you bounce your opponent is allowed to slap the ball out of the way in defense of their cups!
Distractions are one of the most fun parts of the game and one that tends to be dominated by the women folk. When you’re opponents are shooting feel free to do whatever you can to psyche them out. The only rule with distractions is that you cannot cross the edge of the table.

Variations
Assassin – In this form of beer pong you have to call the cup before you hit it or it doesn’t count. A simple way to up the ante.
Civil War – 3 players line up on each team. Each player fills up a 6 cup formation in front of them. Once your cups are knocked out you are out of the game. In Civil War the ball is “free”, there are no turns you simply shoot whenever you get a ball. For this reason Civil War tends to be pretty crazy and ALWAYS fun! Knocked out players can help their team by helping grab the loose balls but a player cannot cross the center of the table at any time!
Thats about all you need to know to play America’s greatest drinking game – Beer Pong. Have fun but remember always drink responsibly.

The Basics

The game can be played with one or two player teams.

Face-Off

One individual from each <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_palmer/3244258952/" Alt"Beer Pong Face Off, Spring Break" title="Beer Pong face off" target="_blank">beer pong team simultaneously throws a ping pong ball towards the opposing team’s cups. If neither sink a shot, the other two members of each team will try to make a cup. Once a cup is made, the face-off winners will begin the beer pong game. If both teams make a shot, teams will continue to shoot until one side misses. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_palmer/3244258498/" Alt"Portable beer pong table" title="Poolside Pong: Inflatable Beer Pong tables" target="_blank">Poolside Pong, the Inflatable version of beer pong, starts the same way.

Game On

From this point forward the teams will take turns shooting. Each member shoots one ping pong ball at the opposing team’s beer pong cups. If a shot is made, the cup is removed from play. After both shots are taken, it is the opposing teams turn. Game play continues until one team eliminates all of the opposing teams beer pong cups. Depending on house rules, the losing team may be given a redemption turn. Players will have the opportunity to shoot until they miss. If all cups are sunk the game will go into overtime. If both players miss before all cups are eliminated the opposing team wins.

Beer Pong Shots

There are two main types of shots in beer pong: the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_palmer/3243430569/" Alt"Beer Pong arc shot" title="Beer Pong arc shot" target="_blank">arc shot and the bounce shot. The arc shot is performed by a player holding the ping pong ball in his or her hand and extending the arm in a forward motion, releasing the ball so that it travels across the table. The bounce shot is performed by a player hitting the ping pong ball off of table, bouncing once before landing in the opposing teams beer pong cups. During a bounce shot the opposing team is allowed to swat or catch the ball before it reaches the cups. If a bounce shot is made the opposing team must remove two beer pong cups from game-play.

Miscellaneous Rules

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_palmer/3243475073/" Alt"Portable beer pong table" title="Floating Beer Pong tables" target="_blank">Beer Pong rules are not static, they change by region, state, and even house-hold. It’s important to establish the beer pong ground rules before beginning game play. Rules are usually set by the house-owner or if playing outdoors with Poolside Pong, by the winning team or owner of the portable table.

The air-ball rule is usually played by experienced beer pong athletes. If a player from either team fails to make contact with the table or rim of the opposing teams beer pong cups, they must remove one of their cups from play.

The no-boggle-catch rule is also played by more experienced beer pong athletes when the air-ball rule is not in effect. If a player overshoots the table and cups, the opposing team has the opportunity to play defense and catch the ping pong ball in mid-air. The defender must catch the ball without boggling or fumbling the ping pong ball in his or her hand. If the player manages to achieve a no-boggle catch, the shooting team must remove a cup from game play.

The <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_palmer/3243442851/" Alt"Beer Pong Rules" title="Poolside Pong rules: Psych-out rule" target="_blank">psych-out rule is one of the most commonly used defensive technique by beer pong players across the United States. A psych-out occurs when player(s) from the opposing team strategically attempt to distract a shooting team member. The tactics used to distract players vary significantly and include: shouting, waving arms, making jokes, turning away, pretending to shoot a ball, calling a fake time-out, using sex appeal or exposing body parts, and much more.

The no-elbows rule is also a very common rule in beer pong. The elbow of a player shooting the ball may never pass the edge of the beer pong table during the forward motion of a shot. If the players elbow passes over the tables edge, it is up to the opposing team to call the elbow rule. The legitimacy of an elbow penalty is usually judged by spectators or a referee watching the game. The shot will not count for a player found guilty of breaking the no-elbow rule and the player loses his or her turn.
